Under the Chinese Medicine Ordinance (Chapter 549 of the Laws of Hong Kong), testing for heavy metals, toxic elements, pesticide residues and microbial limits has been required for the registration of proprietary Chinese medicines since 2003 to ensure that they can meet the safety requirements.
