Chinese Medicine and Pharmaceutical Testing

In Hong Kong, all the drugs and proprietary Chinese medicines require registration to ensure safety and quality. Testing reports (e.g. heavy metals and toxic elements, pesticide residuals, microbiology, stability, etc.) should be submitted to the Department of Health for registration. Heavy Metals in Chinese Medicine

As stated in the Technical guidelines for registration of proprietary Chinese medicines under Chinese Medicine Ordinance (Chapter 549 of the Laws of Hong Kong), three heavy metals and one toxic element are required to be tested for in order to ensure the proprietary Chinese medicines are safe to be registered.

As stated in the Technical guidelines for registration of proprietary Chinese medicines under Chinese Medicine Ordinance (Chapter 549 of the Laws of Hong Kong), non-sterile products, including the staring materials, excipients and the finished products, should be tested for the presence of viable microorganisms.

Pesticide Residues in Chinese Medicine

Under the Chinese Medicine Ordinance (Chapter 549 of the Laws of Hong Kong), testing for pesticide residues has been required for the registration of pCm since 2003 to ensure that they can meet the safety requirements. According to the Technical Guidelines for Registration of proprietary Chinese medicine, 9 organochlorine pesticide residues have to be tested.
