Swimming Pool Water Testing

Swimming and spa pools have often been cited as causes of water borne disease. In order to safeguard the health of the users, the water quality of swimming or spa pools should be checked regularly.

According to the Hong Kong Swimming Pools Regulation (Chapter 132CA), the licensee of a swimming pool should make sure the water quality could meet the certain requirements as described in the following table.

  Parameters Requirements
Standard of Clarity pH 7.0-7.8
Turbidity < 5 NTU
Colour < 5 Hazen Units
Bacteriological Quality E.coli Nil per 100 mL
Total Bacterial Count < 200 cfu/mL

Hot Spa Pool

Hot spa pool, also known as hot Jacuzzi or hot spring, is a self-regulated body of warm water designed for sitting in. The temperature of water is usually maintained at 30 – 40 °C, which provide a suitable environment for the growth of hazardous bacteria such as Legionella pneumophila. Users may get Legionnaires’ disease if the pools contain Legionella pneumophila. Older adults, smokers and people with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to Legionnaires’ disease. As Legionnaires’ disease is fatal, water of hot spa pools should be checked regularly to ensure the absence of Legionella.

Enviro Labs Ltd. (ELL) is a HOKLAS accredited laboratory that has been analyzing swimming pool and spa/jacuzzi pool waters for over 20 years. HOKLAS accreditation has been granted for all the above tests to ensure accuracy of the results. Below is a list of HOKLAS accredited tests related to pool water analysis.

HOKLAS Accreditation of ELL related to Pool Water Analysis :

  • pH
  • Turbidity
  • Colour
  • Residual Chlorine (Total / Free)
  • Heterotrophic Plate Count (Total Bacterial Count)
  • E. coli
  • Legionella spp. including Legionella pneumophila
