Chinese Medicine Testing

Heavy Metals in Chinese Medicine

As stated in the Technical guidelines for registration of proprietary Chinese medicines under Chinese Medicine Ordinance (Chapter 549 of the Laws of Hong Kong), three heavy metals and one toxic element are required to be tested for in order to ensure the proprietary Chinese medicines are safe to be registered.

The three heavy metals are mercury, lead and cadmium; and the toxic element is arsenic. Enviro Labs Ltd. equipped with sophisticated instrument that could provide accurate analytical services to test for the above parameters in proprietary Chinese medicines.

The following table shows the permitted level for the required parameters in proprietary Chinese medicines as stated in the guidelines:

Heavy Metals or Toxic element Maximum permitted level (Total intake)
Mercury 36 micrograms/day
Lead 179 micrograms/day
Arsenic 1,500 micrograms/day
Cadmium 3,500 micrograms/dosage
